HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT LEADERSHIP PROJECTS

Our mission is to improve the environmental health of Halton Region through community education and action.

Why is a healthy environment important?

Your health and well-being depends on fundamentals: air, water, and land. The quality of these essentials is in turn dependent on complex chemical and biological cycles. The air we breathe is dependent on the photosynthetic activity of green plants and the ability of certain microorganisms to fix nitrogen. The oxygen and nitrogen cycles, the water and carbon cycles, all the processes that support life, depend on a healthy biodiverse environment.

Halton's environment

From the shores of Lake Ontario up the dramatic Niagara Escarpment, Halton Region encompasses a range of ecosystems. Ecosystems that are being diminished by urban sprawl and pollution. We assume that other communities beyond our borders will protect their green spaces so that we don't have to. Yet, in this region lies one of the richest ecozones in Canada, (see Biodiversity). By allowing our forest and watersheds to degrade, we loose irreplaceable life and diminish the quality of our own.

Take Action

Our government is charged with our welfare.  Contact your Halton Representatives and tell them a clean and healthy environment should be a priority. Environmental degradation often comes as the acceptable price to be paid for economic growth. A sound economy and a sound environment are not exclusive and wealth for a few should never diminish the quality of life for the general populous. Bulblet Fern - Cystopteris bulbifera
